Did you set New Year’s goals to hit the gym starting in January? Unfortunately, if you’re like many people, your motivation for fulfilling this noble objective may have begun to fade after just a few weeks.

Here are five positive ways to maintain your gym goals after the New Year…and all year long.
One of the leading ways to achieve your larger gym goals is to set mini-goals. Setting smaller goals lets you focus on one specific area of your fitness at a time and gradually build up to your larger goal.
If your New Year’s goal is to complete a 5K by summer, and you are just starting a running routine, please do not go out on the first day and run all 3.1 miles. You will be more successful if you start at a slower pace, even walking, for short sessions. Don’t worry about how fast you walk or how much distance you cover. Instead, concentrate on working your way up to moving faster and for longer periods of time as your body adjusts to your new routine.
Involve your family and friends in your intentions. This can include voicing your short and long-term objectives or inviting them to join you on your next trip to the gym and be your workout buddy. You won’t want to let your exercise partner down, so you’re more likely to show up. Plus, by including others, you can celebrate your progress together.
Whether you’re brand new to gym exercising or a seasoned veteran, tracking your progress will help you stay motivated to achieve your end goals.
There are loads of options for tracking. Of course, there is an app for that, or you can write in a journal or set up a spreadsheet on your computer. The importance of seeing your progress in a tangible form cannot be overstated.
It also helps to put your gym motivation goal in writing. Knowing your “why” will help you maintain your New Year’s goals. There’s something about putting pen to paper that makes everything in life feel a bit more concrete.
