How To Avoid Temptation at the Grocery Store

When you step into a grocery store, you’re stepping into a land of healthy vs unhealthy choices.

These choices are either going to make or break your fitness goals.

Will you be pulled in by the sweet scent of cakes? Or will you stand your ground and power walk to the produce aisle?

This may sound a little intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be!

You are the decision maker of your life and you call the shots . So put down the powdered donuts and pick up those leafy greens!

We’re going to give you some tips on staying on track while food shopping so that you can reach for the healthy options every time!

Don’t Shop On An Empty Stomach

Imagine this: you’re starving. You’ve hardly eaten all day because you’ve been running around doing this and that. You make it to the grocery store, tummy grumbling, surrounded by aisles and aisles of various foods.

Everything and anything looks good. And suddenly, your grocery cart is filled with 3 bags of chips and a container of cookies.

When you’re starving, you’re more likely to listen to your stomach than your brain. This means you’ll be more tempted to indulge in high calorie foods.

Instead of throwing yourself off track, make it a point to grocery shop after you’ve eaten. This will allow you to feel less tempted to get the bad stuff and stick with the good stuff.

And since your meal was healthy and packed with good nutrients (because we know how hard you’ve been working to stay on track), you’ll carry that good decision making with you to the grocery store.

Make A Shopping List

One of the worst things you can do when you’re developing healthy eating habits is go food shopping without a grocery list.

When you shop without a list, you’re mentally giving yourself free reign to buy whatever you want in that moment.

Before you head off to the store, take a few minutes to write down a list of healthy food options you want to buy for the week.

And stick to it!

If you’re only buying the items on your list, your cabinets back home won’t be hiding high calorie, fatty snacks waiting for you to give in and eat “just one”.

And if there’s no temptation to slow you down, eventually you’ll discover your cravings for salty or sweet snacks will taper off!

Find A Recipe

When you don’t have any meals in mind, it can be a little daunting figuring out what the heck you should shop for.

A common mistake some people make is to stock up on large amounts of fruits and vegetables at once.

Soon after, they come to realize “Gee, I have all this food but don’t know what to do with it”.

Sure, you can eat veggies and fruits in their purest form, but that can get pretty boring pretty fast.

We suggest making a trip to Google and searching for some healthy recipes. That way, you can put those fruits and veggies to use and prepare meals that can last you for a couple of days rather than a couple of minutes.
